What kind of doctor should my friend see for alternative treatment/natural therapy?

Basically she's had horrible symptoms for the last year and a half, has been to over a dozen doctors, had all sorts of scans and tests done, and they don't know whats wrong. Today I was reading in a magazine at the hair salon about natural remedies to heal "mystery illnesses" and it was an interview with some doctor who specializes in that, but I forgot what kind of doctor that is. Do you know? So I can tell my friend?|||A medical doctor.

I spent twenty years going to doctors: GP's, internists, cardiologists, neurologists, rheumatologists, gastro-enterologists, dermatologists, endodontists, etc, etc. Got so frustrated with those that I saw chiropractors, cranial manipulators, massage therapists, psychiatrists, a witch doctor, and a preacher.

No, no kidding.

Then one day I injured my hip and was seen by a new doctor.

New doctor walked in the room, took one look at me and asked me to make a fist - and what he saw was this

People who have that, also have a tendency to drop dead unexpectedly from aortic dissection

It was a good thing to know when I had to be rushed to the hospital emergency three years ago.

You tell your freind to keep seeing doctors.

It wil probably save her life one day.

Because no Naturopathic correspondence school graduate would ever 'catch' those hard to diagnose problems. No, they sweep everything under a carpet of "toxins" and adrenal fatigue mumbo-jumbo, and tell people to take laxatives, and mega-doses of vitamin C.|||A classmate during our clinical year at our legitimate naturopathic medical school diagnosed an abdominal aortic aneurysm in a patient under the regular care of a prominent cardiologist. She referred him back to his cardiologist for assement/treatment and the cardio scoffed...

|||The patient was due to travel (long flight) in the next few weeks. The ND STUDENT called and pestered the cardio until he was so exasperated that he did an abdominal ultrasound to shut her up (and demonstrate conclusively that she was an idiot.) Know what he found? A sizeable aneurysm.

|||Very likely saved the patient's life. Gave the cardiologist something to think about, too. He wasnt a bad doc! He had just gotten somewhat complacent and missed a subtle cue that the ND student picked up on full physical.

|||I agree that a correspondence school "grad" would never have caught that. But registered NDs have excellent clinical assessment skills. And we have the luxury of a lot more time in which to perform a thorough assessment!

|||It depends on what her symptoms are. I wouldn't trust some magazine article or people who can claim to heal "mystery illnesses."

Alternative treatment wise i'd recommend Acupuncture as it goes after the root of the problem. I've had it done and it works but. . .your friend may not respond to it at all, or, may need to try out several acupuncturists--not everyone uses the same needle points, effectiveness can vary per person.

Reiki is also a good one, but i would NOT recommend it until your friend finds out the exact cause of what ails her. This way she can judge whether the treatment is helping her or not.

I know Orthodic Systemic Balances, relatively a new thing--a mouthpiece, can help cure lots of things. Its hard to explain but very scientific(http://www.centerforsoundsleep.com/blog/鈥?/a>

I wish your friend the best. I know someone who baffled doctors to the point they wanted to drill a hole in her skull to relieve the migrane pressure and stop the seizures--they didn't know what else to do. Fortunately that person found the OSB and that is working for her.|||There's NO such thing as alternative 'medicine/natural therapy'.

Either something works and it's called medicine, or it does not work and it's an alternative TO medicine.

In cases where it is difficult to diagnose a condition, quacks make there money by prescribing hoax treatments to those who are desperate for answers. Many times they deliberately lie by saying "it's because of toxins" or "you have something wrong with you but luckily I have the cure here" to deliberately sell you a fake treatment.

Do they care if you're cured or not? No because now they at least have your money!

Keep away from these uneducated, lying, thieving quacks. They will NEVER come up with the answer to your friend's problem. At least with real medical doctors you have a chance.|||Your friend is in the same boat as a lot of other people. Conventional medicine and the medical industry spend a lot of your time and money on tests that lead nowhere or they come up with a diagnosis that just puts a name on a condition that they can't do much for, let alone cure.

You were probably reading an article on Homeopathy, which uses symptoms as a guideline to determine the cause. They're then able to treat the cause to remove the problem. It's safe, gentle, effective and has no side effects or toxicity. Tell her to see a professional certified Homeopath.|||A magazine at the hair salon....

These alternative doctors who 'specialize' in 'mystery' illnesses are specialists all right. Specialists in taking advantage the worried well and chronic hypercondriacs.

However, I'm sure their feel good placebo treatments are perfect for your friend. Just tell her to be savvy.

Please read:

"Alternative medicine: Evaluate claims of treatment success"

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alterna鈥?/a>|||They're all quacks.

Your friend's safest option (if she lives in the USA) is to see a Osteopathic Physician ("DO"). They are often altmed-friendly, but their rigorous medical training (and their desire not to lose their medical license) usually prevents them from recommending or practicing the most lunatic unhinged altmed treatments such as homeopathy.|||having learned about medical quackery firsthand, i'm sure she's ready for some competent help. one thing she hasn't tried is correcting her nerve interference problem. tell her to see an hio method upper cervical chiropractor for genuine chiropractic care.|||There's no such thing as "alternative" medicine. There's medical science and then there are scams. Don't try the scams.|||http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articl鈥?/a>|||Health kinesiology, muscle response testing. These are things they do.|||Have a good think about this. What is her lifestyle like and how is her diet? What are the symptoms? Has she even been given a blood test? They should have done that already. Perhaps change doctors and seek the advice of another professional and don't give up.

I have a friend with the same problem. She has been going through a living hell for ages and doctors have written her off. She has been ill for the past 14 months. I'm very frustrated as to what I should do as she always cries when I see her. All I can do is give her hug and tell her things will be ok and offer advice and help (I don't know if she will be ok). The medical profession is now referring her to a psychiatrist which is the last thing she needs to hear. It isn't 'all in her head' and doctors who tell her that are missing the point entirely. She hates every minute of this and wants it to stop. If they would do their job properly for once maybe, these things wouldn't happen.

I really wish I could be more helpful instead of venting frustration. I know how bad it can be. It infuriates me that doctors write off cases they do not know how to diagnose. Calling a patient a hypochondriac is completely unacceptable (and not to mention extremely condescending).

WRONG.

Also, tell your friend not to be seduced by promises of cures as there are many people out there who will promise the earth and take your money without doing much to help. Be skeptical. If I come across the article you saw, I will post it - hopefully it will be the one you saw.

I sincerely hope your friend gets better soon and she finds the support she is looking for.

Best of luck.

Sky x
