What kind of doctor should my mom see for leg pain?

It's not an immobilizing or severe pain; it's just strong enough for her to complain about it.

The pain is throughout the whole of both legs; she says it's in her knees, behind the knee, her ankle, her toes, the arch, the instep, her calves, etc.

The thing is, we don't know exactly what kind of doctor to make an appointment with.

Should it be her regular every day doctor? An orthopedic doctor? A rheumatologist?

The pain is through such a wide area we're not sure which one to go for.|||Richard C is right. Your family doctor is still the "gatekeeper" to the specialists. Conversely, if your mom goes to a Chiropractor and he/she is honest, they can send you to a specialist also, but don't go to a chiro out of the phone book or they will tell you they can fix it. Your mom might respond to chiropractic, but get a referral to one from your family doc if you don't know one personally.|||If I were your mom, I would see her regular doctor. He/she would be able to give her a good look and then (if need be) send her to a specialist. Her doctor should have a better idea about what the problem might be (bones, joints, veins, muscles, etc.) Another reason I say this is because sometimes health insurance companies will not cover a visit to a specialist without a referral from a regular doctor.

Good luck and I hope your mother gets to feeling better soon!|||Anthony, start with the regular doctor and hopefully he will give you at least a working diagnosis. With that at least you should have an idea if she will need any specialized medical intervention.
