How would a doctor react to telling them about intrusive thoughts of death?

If you told a doctor that you sometimes have thoughts of say, walking in front of a bus, or killing other people, what do you think they would do? If you were absolutely certain and clear with the doctor that these were only thoughts, and that you would never act on them? Would the doctor acknowledge them just as intrusive thoughts, or would they be worried that you were crazy and put you in hospital?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.|||You would not be put in a hospital for having those thoughts. Intrusive, unwanted thoughts are symptoms of depression, OCD, and a few other (non-psychotic) mental illnesses. Most likely you would be prescribed an antidepressant because they can be effective at reducing those thoughts. You may also be referred to a counselor to learn techniques to manage your thoughts and emotions better. The doctor will ask questions about other thoughts and behaviors you have to try to get a better understanding of what's going on and give you a better diagnosis. I have had very similar thoughts and they were greatly reduced when I was prescribed an antidepressant. Good luck to you and please seek help. There's no reason you have to continue to live with those thoughts! Do not let fear stop you. =)|||I am a 13 year old middleschooler with severe depression. he wont put you in a hospital at those first thoughts if you knew you wouldn't act on them. It took 2 suicide attempts to get me in one of those places for less than a week. you will probly see a therapist for a while, and get you on some meds.|||I think the doctor would take you very seriously and would be able to give you advice about what to do. I'm sure they would refer you to someone to talk to about your thoughts and get them worked out.|||I have experienced this. Told my psych and he would just up my dose of medication and I had appointments with him more frequently.
